Swan Upon Leda
POSTER
Submission piece for a London art gallery invitation to create an album cover for 7" vinyl pressings of Hozier's song Swan Upon Leda. Bid proceeds were placed towards charity efforts for children in war times.
The song recounts the story of the cruel Zeus who transforms himself into a forceful Swan to overpower and violate Queen Leda. The lyrics describe the boyish innocence of Irish warrior Cú Chulainn and weave in visuals of Andrew's own Irish grandmother who navigated border checkpoints to ensure birth control was available for the safety and well-being of her loved ones. A shamrock is pinned to her shawl in a representation of Ireland. Hozier later dedicated this song to women of Iran and to anyone globally living under foundational systems of oppression that seek to control the right of women to their own autonomy, safety and freedom. I was deeply provoked by these relentless examples of oppression & misogyny and decided that this time, Leda wins. This time—it’s we women who triumph. Grandmother and sister and half-veiled but Leda’s hair is free. Symbols of femininity are intentionally placed; a conch shell, pomegranate seed, a fertile and a powerful Nature. The strength of steel concealed behind the grace and softness of a feather.
SACRED FEMININE
The magnitude and the power of womankind. Throughout all time female strength and grace, intelligence, fire & compassion has been under threat by those who wish to conquer and control it. We know the true story however: Leda always wins.
Close Up Details: The Warrior Setanta/ Cú Chulainn and a hound. The slight tinge of pink from the conch shell (feminity) and an ancient Oak tree.
Close Up Details: Feminine strength portrayed as a feather concealing a will of iron.

Wildflower & Barley
Wildflower & Barley lyrics speak of soil & local roots, and as it ought, this collage contains a woven cacophony of Ireland, the sea, wildflowers, a hare, mint (an ode to a Seamus Heaney poem), a skulll, a journal or book (the doorway to so much possibility) the forest, wild seeds, a night moth, blackberries, swallows in flight, a Celtic knot & barley stalks. Have fun finding all the bits tangled in Hozier's sea-salty windblown hair!

Wildflower
& Barley Mousies
Hozier posted the teaser lyrics to this song in Spring 2021 and also posted what looked to be a delighted harvest mouse cavorting inside a tulip flower, with the statement that he was excited to one day be releasing the music he was neck-deep into writing and composing.
So this little album mock-up was created on the same day as a little joke and to also offer joy back to anyone awaiting future good moments to come.

Nina
Nina Cried Power: Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye, Mavis Staples Joni Mitchell & John Lennon are among those deeply meaningful powerhouse voices and presences reverently portrayed in the song. It was sobering watching the documentaries on Nina's life and learning of the realities behind her work, relationships and the deeply unfair world she had to navigate while performing such deeply powerful songs. I wanted to honor the beauty and power of Nina and all voices rising to claim rightful equality by crowning her in magnificent flowers. If flowers appear too soft you might be mistaken as I can't think of anything more powerful and fearsome than Nature. ;)
